NU Solve
Statistical Consultancy, Research & Training
NU Solve is the commercial consultancy, continuing professional development (CPD), and research unit in statistics and data science within the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics at Newcastle University.
We partner with organisations across industry, government, and healthcare to solve complex, data-driven problems — applying rigorous statistical thinking and applied research to deliver real-world impact.
With roots in the Industrial Statistics Research Unit (founded 1984), NU Solve has over three decades of experience translating academic expertise into practical solutions for businesses and public sector organisations alike.
Academic rigour. Tailored solutions. Measurable impact across industry, government and healthcare.
Commercial Consultancy
Our consultancy team works directly with organisations to design, deliver, and interpret statistical analyses that inform decisions and drive measurable outcomes. Whether you need bespoke modelling, a methodology review, or support in evidence-sparse environments, we bring academic rigour to real-world challenges.
Data Analysis & Predictive Modelling
We help organisations extract insight from data and make informed decisions.
- Estimate trends, patterns, and relationships between variables
- Measure the impact of changes or interventions
- Predict outcomes under different scenarios
- Clear, accessible reporting of results
Impact:
- Developed advanced statistical models to predict collision hotspots and evaluate road safety interventions, leading to a 24% reduction in road casualties in North Yorkshire and £22.5 million in estimated accident prevention savings
- Developed predictive models to improve operational efficiency in gas networks, reducing gas bookings by 16% (saving £1m+ annually in capacity)
Statistical Methodology Review
We assess and strengthen existing analytical approaches.
- Identify weaknesses or risks in current methods
- Provide practical recommendations
- Improve robustness, transparency, and accuracy
Impact:
- Corrected national gas shrinkage modelling errors, significantly improving estimates reported to regulators
Structured Expert Elicitation
We design and deliver structured expert elicitation studies for data-sparse problems.
- Best-practice methodologies (used by NICE and the European Food Safety Authority, EFSA)
- Quantifying uncertainty in complex decision-making
- Applications in healthcare, food safety, and energy
Impact:
- Contributed to NHS approval of a life-extending cancer drug
- Informed risk assessments of foods for human consumption for EFSA
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
NU Solve offers training programmes for public and private sector organisations, designed to build capability in statistical thinking, data analysis, and operational excellence.
Bespoke Training in Statistics & Data Science
We design and deliver training tailored to your organisation's specific needs, sector, and skill level.
Topics include:
- Introduction to Statistics
- Data Analysis & Data Management
- Machine Learning
- Design of Experiments
- R and Python programming
Delivered with sector-specific examples, hands-on exercises, and flexible formats — online, in-person, or hybrid.
Online CPD Courses in Statistical Data Science

Commercial Research
We undertake collaborative and contract research projects, applying cutting-edge statistical methodology to real-world challenges.
Our research-led approach ensures:
- Innovative, evidence-based solutions
- Access to academic expertise
- Translation of theory into practical impact
Improving Road Safety Through Data-Driven Policy
We worked with UK police forces and transport authorities to develop advanced statistical models for identifying traffic collision hotspots and evaluating safety interventions.
Outcome:
- 24% reduction in road casualties in North Yorkshire
- £22.5 million in estimated accident prevention savings
- Influence on road safety policy in over 60 countries
Our models are now embedded in widely used road safety software, supporting evidence-based decision-making globally.
Optimising Gas Network Operations
In collaboration with partners in the energy sector, we developed predictive models to improve operational efficiency and resilience in gas networks.
Outcome:
- 16% reduction in gas bookings
- Over £1 million annual capacity savings
- Avoided penalties of up to £1 million per day during extreme conditions
This work enabled more accurate forecasting and better resource planning under high-demand scenarios.
Supporting Life-Changing Healthcare Decisions
We contributed to a structured expert knowledge elicitation for National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to inform a decision on a cancer treatment.
Outcome:
- Contributed to overturning a decision not to fund the drug
- Enabled patient access via the NHS
- Methodology later recommended by NICE
This project demonstrates how robust statistical methods can directly influence critical healthcare decisions and improve patient outcomes.
